Spirit of Sydney’s First Mate
We welcome back a former team member, Aurore Dewas, a French native who left her successes in the business world after a very special navigation with the Marion Dufesne scientific vessel back in August 2017. If you asked Aurore what brought her to the ocean and away from her desk, she’d tell you about her childhood memories of how she lived in La Reunion in the Indian Ocean. Later, during her sabbatical, she learned to listen to her soul and how the pure, wild parts of the Far South made her senses come alive. Even today, Aurore truly treasures the disconnection from the outside world and the reconnection with people she feels while sailing among such beautiful seas, ice, mountains, and glaciers. Aurore was born a traveler and at age fifteen she studied abroad in the U.S. and she also lived in London, England which explains how her English is so great. However, she also considers herself a bit of a conventional person by worldly standards having first finished business school and then working hard many years in the business world. It wasn’t until after her sabbatical that she parted ways with the conventional and began her new chapter in life as a seafarer. And set sail she has! She logged many miles along journeys to the French Polynesia, Antarctica, South Orkneys, South Georgia, Falklands, Greenland, France, Iceland, Scotland, Patagonian fjords, Cape Horn, and Mauritius Island. By expanding her portfolio to include the rugged remoteness of the Arctic she continued to pursue the charm and attachment she first found woven between memories of her childhood and her Antarctic sabbatical.
