Pythia Island

Overcast this morning, but as we progressed from Murray Harbour down the strait, we could see the sun shining on the mountains of the peninsular on the port side, with grey clouds preventing the view of the peaks – quite eerie and spectacular at the same time

Anchor Watch

After a briefing for all advising what we needed to look out for, my watch started at 06:00 – it was quite cold but very clear. I decided to remain on deck instead of getting in and out of the cabin, and was rewarded by the appearance of two Humpback whales surfacing

Kayaking Antarctica

Spring Point

08/02/2020 – Saturday We left Cape Herschel and travelled down the western side of Trinity Peninsula to Spring Point where there were massive glaciers – absolutely spectacular. After lunch Zvi, Dave, Paul and Mark went kayaking and Calypso, Adrien, Julin and Tiak went on the zodiac to investigate the surroundings. The “weakest link” (AKA The …

Gentoo Penguins

The “Weakest Link” goes kayaking!

06/02/2020 – Thursday The winds had improved, and we left Deception and headed to Trinity Island off the coast of Trinity Peninsula. Upon arrival, despite very strong winds (and getting quite wet in the zodiac) we ventured to see a colony of Gentoo penguins. The “weakest link”(AKA the writer of this post) didn’t venture too …

Hike at Deception Island

Deception Island

04/02/2020 – Tuesday Deception Island – we dropped anchor at Deception around 02:15. When those not on watch awoke, we were moored in a caldera with other smaller calderas around, surrounded by a variety of volcanic rims. There were 2 scientific stations on the other side of the bay – one Spanish and the other …

Drake Passage to Antarctica

01/02/2020 to 03/02/2020 – Saturday to Monday Drake Passage – overall, I believe we were very fortunate with respect to the seas and winds going over the Drake. It could definitely been a lot worse, although there were some of the expeditioners who would most probably disagree with that statement. Excluding the crew, three expeditioners …

End of an Adventure

After a couple weeks exploring Antarctica, camping, kayaking and enjoying the proximity of  wildlife;our group of paddlers safely returned to Ushuaia today. They had great weather in Antarctica and got to paddle pretty much every day. Most likely everyone really excited about a hot shower and a nice bed that is not moving!

LAST KAYAKING DAY

The kayak team finished their last paddle in Antarctica in the most spectacular fashion. We managed to paddle the little visited North West Coast of the Melchior Islands and weave ourselves through the maze of sea stacks that so rarely are visited by kayakers. We found a narrow channel of sea ice and experienced what …
