January 19th., 2019.
We are headed for the Drake now and are on 3 hour
watches with 6 hours off. Not much wind so we are motoring. Everyone one feeling fine. We cooked up lots of meals today in anticipation of it
being difficult to cook while underway. We went spent a noisy and
restless night in our anchorage in Port Lockroy last night due to a
great deal of wind. We enjoyed the hospitality of the Port Lockroy
Historical Society yesterday while visiting their museum and gift shop.
This morning we went ashore at Jougla bay to photograph Gentoo penguins
and chicks. There were also old whale bones that made for interesting
photos. The snow and high wind made all but the heartiest among us
retreat back to Spirit of Sydney within an hour.
We just saw a large pod of Humpback whales. It was the sighting of a
lifetime for some of us.
We are sad to have our adventure almost over. We will each remember our
trip on the Spirit of Sydney as a highlight in a our lives.
